The Rev. Katie Long, DMin

The Rev. Katie Long, DMin, serves on the CSNSF Board and has edited the Family Systems Forum since June 2004. She developed and taught modules on Writing Based on Bowen’s Theory, which explores writing for publication and presenting as opportunities for self-difference. She brings wide experience in writing and editing to teaching approaches to these tasks that consider the emotional context.
She holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the School of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Divinity from St. Mary’s Seminary of St. Thomas University, Houston, and a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Counseling from Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
After studying Bowens theory for several years through CSNSF, she participated in the Postgraduate Program at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family for five years. She teaches Bowen theory and applications in ministry in various settings.
Dr. Long served as a hospital chaplain, an associate pastor for caring ministries, a campus minister and as pastor of four congregations before retiring from full-time United Methodist ministry in 2017. She has worked extensively with people pursuing ordained ministry in many settings, including Clinical Pastoral Education programs, seminary classes, mentoring and field education reflection groups. She also has served on denominational committees and boards credentialing men and women for ministry. These experiences give her an interest in how leaders emerge from families and in applying Bowen theory in congregations and other organizations.
She lives in Cypress, Texas, with her husband, also a writer and editor, and near their daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren. She is an avid gardener.
